What changes on January 1, 2027

Alberta is moving to a Care-First auto insurance model on January 1, 2027. Under it, most collision claims will be handled through insurer-paid benefits rather than the courts, and the right to sue an at-fault driver will be limited to a narrow set of circumstances.

Collisions occurring on or before December 31, 2026 are not affected. They remain under the current rules, with the same two-year limitation period.
